Construction Industry

The Construction industry represents about 9% of Australia's workforce. Within this industry 71% of workers were covered by workers' compensation. Employers' paid 2.5% of PAYG to cover its workers for workers' compensation.

In 2009-2010 the Construction industry accounted for 11% of all serious workers' compensation claims which equates to 37 workers daily.

This is well above the average of 14 workers across all industries.

The most common causes of injury in this industry are:

1. Muscular stress (35% of claims)
2. Slips, trips and falls (26% of claims)
3. Being hit by moving objects (16% of claims)

IN 2009-2010 there were 41 fatalities recorded which was the highest number of all industries and corresponds to a fatality rate of 5.9 per 1,000 workers. This is almost 3 times the industry average of 1.9.
