Business Situation
Safe Work Methods Statement (SWMS) document the process of reducing or eliminating risk associated with performing high risk operations or tasks.

In Australia SWMS are also referred to as Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Work Method Statements (WMS). In the WHS 2012 legislation they are referred to as Safe Work Method Statments or SWMS.

SWMS are industry specific and specify:
  • The hazards associated with performing the operation or task
  • The controls in place to mitigate the identified hazard
  • The effectiveness of a control mechanism

SWMS should be regularly reviewed and updated in close cooperation with those responsible for their implementation.

SWMS link in with Safe Act or Behaviour Observations which provide a two way feed-back mechanism ensuring procedures are followed and documentation is up to date.
